Our Farm

compost used in waste practices on rooftop farm

Waste

On our rooftop farm, no plant is left behind…That is, if it’s not diseased. Every single one of our plants has a purpose, whether it’s to fend off pests, feed our hungry farmers or use in our beauty creations. Pruned leaves, stems and roots go into our compost bin and we incinerate anything that has signs of disease.

In our development we reuse bottles that were sent for testing to fill with our next round of extracts. We also wash and disinfect all bottles and materials to reuse when we’re testing out new formulations. Precision scales are also used to limit the amount of ingredient waste that goes into the product formulation process.

In our production, we do everything in our power to reduce waste in our supply chain. By keeping it short and streamlined, we reuse bottles that were sent for testing to fill with our next round of extracts.

rainwater barrel used in irrigating rooftop farms

Water

Guess what? Our green roofs absorb rainfall which means we’re helping to reduce the effects of combined sewer overflow on our city’s many waterways. Our farms are also irrigated using highly efficient drip, solar powered and rain barrel irrigation systems that are constantly checked and recalibrated. Every year, we look at what new systems are out there to improve.

Water is a key ingredient that can make up to 80% of personal care products. We’re aiming to change the way the world thinks about, uses and transports water by continuing to bring our production process locally.

Improving New York's Air Quality with our rooftop farm

Air

Our rooftop farms are working every day to help make the air in New York City cooler and cleaner. By taking in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen, our green spaces clean and filter the urban air, combating climate change and improving public health.

By growing our botanicals on our rooftops and reducing the supply chain, we’re reducing the carbon emissions that would have otherwise been used to farm, process and transport those extracts from halfway across the world.

How our farming methods promote sustainability

Farming Methods

While we are not yet certified organic, our soil-based farming practices adhere to organic principles and guidelines, meaning we only use products for pest management and soil amendment that are OMRI certified.

Seed & Botanical Selection

To ensure the use and growth of the highest quality botanicals on our rooftops, our seeds and plants come from either certified organic farms or from our own harvest and propagation efforts. We are also committed to growing rare varieties of botanicals, not only to elevate our expertise but to find the best ingredients possible for our users.

solar energy used to power rooftop farm in Brooklyn

Energy

While most of our farm growing happens outside which uses solar energy and batteries to power our automatic irrigation systems, we do use electricity to fuel our office and production processes. We’re currently only using green energy provided by green mountain energy and we’re aiming to use UPS’ carbon neutral shipping for any future production and shipping that will be used to ship our extracts and finished products to the end consumer.
